Structure Sets Us free

We often think of freedom and structure as opposing forces, with freedom representing spontaneity, choice, and the absence of rules, and structure representing rigid schedules and constraints. In fact though, structure enhances our freedom. By providing a framework for our lives, structure allows us to focus on what really matters, rather than wasting energy on decisions that could easily be automated through routines. Having one day that is unplanned and open for whatever comes next can be a lovely break, and a welcome way to relax. Having every day unplanned and unstructured is a recipe for stagnation. This paradoxical relationship— structure leading to freedom—helps us navigate life more effectively and with greater ease.

Structure helps us create a solid base from which to grow, reducing the number of decisions we need to make on a daily basis, freeing up our mental energy for more important tasks, and ideally, helping us focus on what is most important. Structure around exercise keeps us fit, structure around meals helps us come together, structure around meditation or quiet reflection helps us stay grounded. Structure does not need to be overly rigid, and can include free time– in fact, having built-in free time is key for creativity.

Routines play a key role helping to create structure. Far from being stifling, routines create rhythm and flow. When we wake up at the same time, begin our day with familiar activities, and establish predictable patterns, our brains adapt to these cycles, making it easier to move through our day with less effort. When we have intentionally cultivated these routines to incorporate what matters, we by default do what is important. In contrast, without routines, every day is a game of roulette: will I decide to exercise today? To have lunch? To see my partner? To do my work?

Beyond helping us stay focused on what is important and efficient with what we need to accomplish, structure provides us with the momentum to get through difficult times. When life becomes unpredictable or overwhelming, structure is often the thing that we can fall back on to stay grounded. It gives us a framework we can rely on when everything else feels uncertain, “I may not know what today will bring, but I know my day starts with a run.” Knowing we have certain routines in place helps us maintain a sense of efficacy and control, even when circumstances are chaotic.

During times of stress, the simple act of sticking to a routine—whether it’s a tennis game or a quiet moment of reflection—can offer a sense of stability. In these moments, structure acts as a lifeline. It allows us to keep moving forward, even when progress feels difficult.

Structure is sometimes perceived as a limit on creativity or spontaneity. However, structure doesn’t need to be inflexible. Instead, it can be designed to support and amplify our creativity. When we know certain aspects of our life are organized and taken care of, we can dedicate our mental space to exploring new ideas, problem-solving, or taking creative risks. Moreover, many creative tasks are difficult, and having structure in our life can help focus our attention on the creative process, allowing us to make steady progress, rather than sporadically working only when we feel inspired. With structure, we establish consistent habits that keep us engaged with our creative work, even during periods of low motivation. This disciplined approach helps us push through creative blocks, refine our ideas, and ultimately produce better results. Structure becomes the framework within which creativity can flourish.

Structure and routine can be considered across different time scales, each serving a different purpose. Having a weekly time to meet with friends or rest acknowledges the reality that not every day is filled with leisure time. Monthly routines can help us stay aligned with broader or attend to things that require regular but not daily attention. On a monthly or yearly scale, structure helps us plan long-term goals and track progress.Yearly structures—like setting intentions or scheduling vacations—provide a sense of direction and momentum over the long term. These larger time scales help us see the big picture and ensure that our daily and weekly routines support our broader aspirations, allowing for growth and progress while keeping us grounded. They also help mark the passage of time.

When I see patients who are floundering, establishing structures and routines is one of the first areas I try to intervene. After all, health emerges from our cumulative decisions, and our cumulative decisions are generally a result of the structures we have in our life.
